(Once XP-2 has booted and reallocated new drive letters, the old-XP partition can be reintroduced into the system, if desired.)Īlthough these examples use XP, they apply just as well to NT, 2000 and Windows 7. If new-XP sees old-XP, it won't reuse the original drive letter when it assigns a drive letter to itself. If you only copy the Win7 partition the OS on the new HD won't load.Īnd finally, obey the Microsoft cloning rules. do not let old-XP see the new partition before cloning.ĭoing so would give XP a chance to assign a drive letter, it will be remembered by the registry when it is cloned, and the clone will adopt the wrong drive letter for itself.ĭo not let new-XP see the old-XP partition the first time it boots. For example, if you have Win7 and there is a SRP then you have two partitions to copy. With various computers: WinXP and Win7 OS.įirst, understand what you need to copy. I've used Ghost 15 SP1 Copy Drive a few dozen times without a failure.

So you have to jump through hoops and download "permission editors" that only work in IE8 (and don't work if you have any antispyware loaded - and download patched versions of Ghost from Symantec even if you have a brand new DVD versionĪnd even if you DO get it to load and work, it does not do the ONE task that it is recommended for?īUT, Norton Ghost has no wizard for this, and the DEFAULTS ensure that:ġ - you blast your original HD so it will not rebootĢ - the copy process (following threads here) will require me to also use BootIT, BCDedit and a heap of other thingsģ - if the master C: disk is working, but failing slowly, GHOST *will not copy it" EVEN IF YOU SET "ignore errors"Ĥ - it will assign a drive letter to the new drive EVEN THOUGH THIS SPECIFICALLY prevents a cloned C drive workingĭear NORTON, please REWRITE your wizards so they do the job this programme used to do so wellīefore this thread dies I'd like to mention how to use Copy Drive successfully.

Norton Ghost will NOT properly install to Windows 7 if you have any sort of of antivirus as you get the dreaded "not mapped security ID errors" that mean it simply won't work I've used it before (in XP days, and Ghost was simple - hit clone, and make a clone, swap cables, reboot, job done) The most common reasons for wanting to do this would beĢ - a master C: disk is failing (usually SMART reporting failures to the OS, or Windows read errors)

Now that I have booted up using this Ghost CD, I don’t see any options that allow me to Ghost one hard drive to another hard drive.ĭoes Norton Ghost 15 have this capability, or will I need to obtain an older version of Norton Ghost (such as version 7.The simplest operation in the world should be "clone an exact copy of the C: drive to a new drive" I have been told that the only way to complete such a clone (or “Ghost” is by using the Ghost 15 boot CD. Therefore, when I replace the smaller capacity hard drive with the newer, larger hard drive (that has just received the Ghost image) this hard drive won’t boot into Windows. While I am able to successfully ghost the hard drive, I don't have the option to set drive active (for booting OS) as it is grayed out.

I have already tried using the Windows XP Ghost program to ghost my hard drive to this larger hard drive.

Then I want this bigger hard drive to be able to boot into Windows XP just like the existing smaller capacity Windows XP hard drive does. I have booted up off of the Norton Ghost 15 boot CD with the hopes of cloning "Ghosting" a hard drive to a bigger hard drive. Does the Norton Ghost 15 boot CD allow you to clone "Ghost" one hard drive to another hard drive (just like how the Ghost floppies in the older versions of Norton Ghost allowed you to do)?
